The Power of YOU!   - Wednesday, March 13, 2013

Turn on the radio or TV and you are bound to find your favorite show being (annoyingly) interrupted by commercials from big businesses and chain stores. What you won't see are commercials of your local, small businesses that are right in your own backyard.                                                       Small business = Small advertising budget, but every business needs customers to be successful, and that's where YOU come in. In the world of small business, YOU are the most powerful advertising tool we could possibly have. There are so many ways you can support your local small businesses without much time or effort. Here are just a few:

1. Social Media.
You'd have to be living in a cave to not know about Facebook, Yelp, Foursquare, Twitter or any other multitude of social media sights. Whichever format is your favorite, when you are here, check-in and give us some love! OK, so maybe you don't want the paparazzi showing up wherever you are... then check in when you are leaving. Did you know that we have a reward for checking in? No? Well, check it out, and then check in!
While you are at it, make sure that you have "Liked" our Facebook page, that you have selected to have it show up in your news feed and that you like and comment on posts. Facebook keeps changing the way it allows businesses to communicate with you, so you have to be pro-active and make sure we can! We have put social media sharing links on all of our newsletters to you so that you can easily share them with your friends as well!

2. Review Us.
Did you get a cut that you LOVE? Is your color FABULOUS? Did you have so much fun in here last time you were in that you didn't want to leave? Don't keep it a secret! Share it with the world! Websites such as Portland City Search, Yelp, and Google all have opportunities for you to tell everyone how awesome your favorite salon is. There is even a place on our Facebook page where you can leave a recommendation. The Internet is the new phone book, so when people search for a local salon, help to make sure we are on their radar!

3. Tell Everyone.
Tell Your Friends. And your Family. And your Co-workers. And your Co-workers' friends. Yes, all of them. We would LOVE to have all of them as clients. We promise we won't share your secrets or tell if you've come in to get your roots done when you were home "sick". We will happily do your mom-in-law's hair (but, no, we won't shave her bald!). We have referral cards you can keep handy to make it easy, AND they offer your friend 10% off their first visit, or hand them a regular business card or just write our number down for them. Any way you slice it, we'd love to see your friends!
Your referral and recommendation is always the highest compliment that you could ever pay us, as it is what keeps our doors open and allows us to do what we love doing; So, thank you, for sharing with the world. We are always honored to have your trust!

HAIRSPRAY!   - Tuesday, February 26, 2013
My first experiences with hairspray are attached to the silver and pink can of Aqua Net Hairspray. Although it's been over 20 years, I have vivid memories of this wondrous product. I remember the looks of the can, the smell of the spray and the way that when I brushed my hair after applying it, it flaked whiter than the fresh Minnesotan snow outside my windows.

Hairspray first made it's debut during World War Two (1943 to be exact). While men went off to war, the government was researching how to best distribute insect spray to members of the military so that they could prevent malaria. Well, once the war ended, the beauty industry decided that those mosquito fighting aerosol cans would be perfect for delivering the style freezing sprays, and so hairspray was born. The first manufacturer of hairspray also produced the first spray paint and spray deodorant!

In the 50's, the bouffant was all the rage, and of course, to get a perfect bouffant, you needed hairspray, so the product's popularity skyrocketed, and Spray Net and Aqua Net brands were born. By the time pill boxes and bee hives arrived on the scene, made popular by Jackie Kennedy, women everywhere had to have a can of spray at the ready. The product was even out-selling lipstick!

In the 70's, the woman's lib movement and the peace loving hippies with long, free-flowing hair meant that hairspray would take a back seat in the world of fashion, but glam and punk rock would push it back to the forefront of the beauty scene, with new, environmentally friendly ingredients.

Today, you'd be hard pressed to find a lady's bathroom that doesn't hold at least one can of this wonder product, and in fact, it comes in so many hold varieties that you just might find two!

March is hairspray month at Ritual! Save 10%** off of your favorite brands, including:AG Hair, American Crew, Aquage, Farouk, Framesi, Big Sexy Hair, Sebastian, Paul Mitchell, Matrix, Joico, Kenra, Rusk, TIGI, Indie, Nioxin, and Wella. **Ritual does not carry all of these brands but we can get them all, so call us to place a special order of your favorites!

It's Just Hair   - Thursday, August 16, 2012

Hair. It's what we do. We sleep, eat, drink hair. We find inspiration in colors, textures & shapes. We encourage our clients to use high quality products, come in for regular maintenance and consider changing it up once in a while (or every visit if they're up for it!). We can't get away from it. If you find us standing in line behind you at the grocery store, you can bet we're checking out your hair!

So, when we heard about our little friend Mykayla, we knew we had to get involved.

Mykayla is seven years old and on July 14th of this year she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Mykayla's mom made an appointment to get Mykayla's  head shaved because it had started to fall out, and that's when we hatched a plan...

Rather than schedule an appointment, why not have a party? A Head Shaving Party! We could have balloons and popcorn and sno-cones. It was a great idea, but we wanted to make it a little bit better. We didn't want Mykayla to be the first one to get her head shaved at Ritual the week of her party. We wanted her to be one of many to get her head shaved. So the fun began.

Over the course of two days we shaved many heads, all in support of Mykayla. Each person took a before picture holding a sign that said "This is for Mykayla!" and then they wrote their own message to Mykayla on a piece of paper for their after picture. By the time Mykayla and her family showed up, we had our clippers warmed up and ready for them. Two of our own staff even shaved it off for Mykayla, and we are very proud of them for taking the plunge! You can find a full album of this event and the days leading up to it on our Facebook Page.

We would like to thank Mykayla's family for allowing us the privilege of participating in Mykayla's big day. We are joining with them in coving Mykayla with positive energy and prayers of healing. Most of all, we'd like to thank Mykayla for reminding us that although hair is what we do, it is just hair.

You can learn more about Mykayla and follow her progress on a Facebook page her family has set up for her here.

Meet Mykayla   - Wednesday, August 8, 2012
We'd like to introduce you to Mykayla. She is seven years old and was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on July 14th. Although she has so far been responding well to chemotherapy, she is facing years of treatments, feeling icky and worry. Not the way a kid should spend their time!
Mykayla will be in the salon this week to have her head shaved as her hair has started to fall out. We are trying to make this day as enjoyable as possible for her (and for her parents... can you imagine?!) and we wanted to give you an opportunity to help.
First, we don't want Mykayla to be the only person who gets her head shaved this week, so from now through the end of the day on Thursday, anyone who would like their head shaved (using a 0-#2 blade) can get it done for FREE as long as you are willing to let us take a picture of you. Moms: if you have a boy that likes to wear his hair short, it's the perfect time to get it shaved. It'll be a half an inch long by the time school starts :)
Second, Mykayla will be without hair for awhile, so we think she needs an extensive head wear collection. Claire's, Icing, Old Navy, Target or anywhere else you can think of- even if you make one, bring a hat to Ritual by Thursday at 5pm to add to her collection!
Third, go get yourself a hat! The Bonnet Boutique has set up a "Hat Bank" for Mykayla at their store in the Pearl. Every hat that is purchased in Mykayla's honor will earn her 10% of the sale price of the hat into her hat bank. You get a cute hat, she gets 10% in the bank to go shopping in the future!
Mykayla has a tax-deductible account set up at US Bank to help with the extraordinary expenses a medical diagnosis like this brings. If you are interested in donating to that account, we have the account number here at the salon. Just call and we'll pass it along to you.

Mykayla has already had to receive blood transfusions so consider donating blood in her honor through the Red Cross. It is also a real possibility that kids in Mykayla's situation need bone marrow transplants. If you are not already on the Bone Marrow Registry, consider joining. There are events in Vancounver on August 14th & 15th and it's a simple mouth swab and some paperwork. You could literally save a life.
We encourage you to forward this email to your friends and family. By spreading the word you are helping to build an ever growing support network for Mykayla and other kids in need.
Finally, since the day that we opened we have done haircuts for Locks of Love. We will continue to do them, but will do them in Mykayla's honor until she gets a clean bill of health!
