Facebook Love - Friday, August 17, 2012
Did you know we have a Facebook page? You should come and check it out. As a form of social media Facebook has a way of keeping people connected and informed without feeling like you have to spend an hour on the phone with them. I love that because although I'd like nothing better than to spend an hour on the phone with each of my clients, I for some reason just can't find that kind of time!
This week we've started some Facebook Friend Appreciation ... Each morning, I'll go to our Facebook friend list and pull a name off of the bottom of it (the list puts people in a random order each time I log in). That person will then have 24 hours to get a new client to book an appointment at the salon, earning themselves (our Facebook Friend) a free haircut.
Our normal referral rewards are $10 for each referral, so this is an awesome deal!
Check our Facebook page each morning to see if your name is on the wall, post some pictures to our wall showing us your cute hair or some ideas you are mulling over... come on by and show us some FB love :)Labels: appreciation, clients, Facebook, free, haircut, love, referral, referral rewards
It's Just Hair - Thursday, August 16, 2012
Hair. It's what we do. We sleep, eat, drink hair. We find inspiration in colors, textures & shapes. We encourage our clients to use high quality products, come in for regular maintenance and consider changing it up once in a while (or every visit if they're up for it!). We can't get away from it. If you find us standing in line behind you at the grocery store, you can bet we're checking out your hair!
So, when we heard about our little friend Mykayla, we knew we had to get involved.
Mykayla is seven years old and on July 14th of this year she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Mykayla's mom made an appointment to get Mykayla's head shaved because it had started to fall out, and that's when we hatched a plan...
Rather than schedule an appointment, why not have a party? A Head Shaving Party! We could have balloons and popcorn and sno-cones. It was a great idea, but we wanted to make it a little bit better. We didn't want Mykayla to be the first one to get her head shaved at Ritual the week of her party. We wanted her to be one of many to get her head shaved. So the fun began.
Over the course of two days we shaved many heads, all in support of Mykayla. Each person took a before picture holding a sign that said "This is for Mykayla!" and then they wrote their own message to Mykayla on a piece of paper for their after picture. By the time Mykayla and her family showed up, we had our clippers warmed up and ready for them. Two of our own staff even shaved it off for Mykayla, and we are very proud of them for taking the plunge! You can find a full album of this event and the days leading up to it on our Facebook Page.
We would like to thank Mykayla's family for allowing us the privilege of participating in Mykayla's big day. We are joining with them in coving Mykayla with positive energy and prayers of healing. Most of all, we'd like to thank Mykayla for reminding us that although hair is what we do, it is just hair.
You can learn more about Mykayla and follow her progress on a Facebook page her family has set up for her here.

Meet Mykayla - Wednesday, August 8, 2012
We'd like to introduce you to Mykayla. She is seven years old and was
diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on July 14th. Although she has so
far been responding well to chemotherapy, she is facing years of treatments,
feeling icky and worry. Not the way a kid should spend their time!
Mykayla will be in the salon this week to have her head shaved as her hair
has started to fall out. We are trying to make this day as enjoyable as possible
for her (and for her parents... can you imagine?!) and we wanted to give you
an opportunity to help.
First, we don't want Mykayla to be the only person who gets her head shaved
this week, so from now through the end of the day on Thursday, anyone who would
like their head shaved (using a 0-#2 blade) can get it done for FREE as long as
you are willing to let us take a picture of you. Moms: if you have a boy that
likes to wear his hair short, it's the perfect time to get it shaved. It'll be a
half an inch long by the time school starts :)
Second, Mykayla will be without hair for awhile, so we think she needs an
extensive head wear collection. Claire's, Icing, Old Navy, Target or anywhere
else you can think of- even if you make one, bring a hat to Ritual by Thursday
at 5pm to add to her collection!
Third, go get yourself a hat! The Bonnet Boutique has set up a "Hat
Bank" for Mykayla at their store in the Pearl. Every hat that is purchased in
Mykayla's honor will earn her 10% of the sale price of the hat into her hat
bank. You get a cute hat, she gets 10% in the bank to go shopping in the
future!
Mykayla has a tax-deductible account set up at US Bank to help with the
extraordinary expenses a medical diagnosis like this brings. If you are
interested in donating to that account, we have the account number here at the
salon. Just call and we'll pass it along to you.
Mykayla has already had to receive blood transfusions so consider donating
blood in her honor through the Red Cross. It
is also a real possibility that kids in Mykayla's situation need bone marrow
transplants. If you are not already on the Bone Marrow Registry, consider joining. There are
events in Vancounver on August 14th &
15th and it's a simple mouth swab and some paperwork. You could literally
save a life.
We encourage you to forward this email to your friends and family.
By spreading the word you are helping to build an ever growing support network
for Mykayla and other kids in need.
Finally, since the day that we opened we have done haircuts
for Locks of Love. We will continue to do them, but will
do them in Mykayla's honor until she gets a clean bill of health!
