Annual Backpack Sponsorship! - Thursday, May 31, 2012
I know that school is just getting ready to get out, but remember back to when you were a kid... Do you remember getting ready to go back to school? Although it is sad to say good bye to summer, it is always exciting picking out your school supplies for the upcoming school year. To this day, I LOVE the smell of a new box of crayons!
If you ask a teacher, there are many kids that don't come to school with school supplies, and a great number of them are foster children. When you are a foster child, there are so many ways that you are different from everyone else. You don't live with your parents, you don't have many of your own belongings, most, if not all of your clothing is second hand, you have things like attorneys, CASA workers, caseworkers and therapists that are a part of your everyday life, you likely live in a different home than your siblings do. The list goes on, and not having school supplies is just another way that it is obvious that you are different. It is nearly impossible to come out of the foster care system without deep emotional scars and without a sense of embarassment or even shame, but at Ritual, we believe that providing new school supplies to foster kids is an easy way to make them feel more like a "normal" kid!
With your tax deductible donation of just $30, we are able to purchase a new backpack and fill it with name-brand school supplies for local kids in foster care. If you've done any school supply shopping, you know that it is nearly impossible to find a backpack for $30, let alone to fill it, but we are bargin shoppers that aren't afraid to ask for deep discounts from retailers! We can stretch a buck for these great kids!
Our goal this year is to raise enough money to provide 40 kids with backpacks. That means that we have to raise $1200! Consider supporting Royal Family Kids so a foster child enjoy the start of a new school year! Thank you~Labels: back to school, backpacks, donations, RFKC
Memorial Day - Tuesday, May 29, 2012
Memorial Day was yesterday, and we hope that you not only enjoyed a day off, but that you took some time to use the day as it was intended. I know I can't be the only person in the world who gets annoyed when Hallmark "creates" another holiday, or when the retailers use every holiday to get you to purchase their goods. Memorial Day is one of those national holidays that should NOT be used for amping up retail sales.
We, as consumers are so used to this that it sometimes becomes white noise, but if you put yourself in the shoes of a family that has a soldier deployed somewhere, or worse, in the shoes of a mother who has lost a son, a husband who has lost a wife or a child who has lost a parent, you can imagine how offensive the "Memorial Day Sale" really is. I'll get off of my soap box, but not without first taking a moment to say THANK YOU to those who have sacrificed so that I can live in freedom.

Birthdays and Other Stuff! - Tuesday, May 22, 2012
So first of all, Happy Happy Birthday to our favorite guy stylist, Castor! Castor officially celebrated his birthday on Sunday, but the whole Ritual gang (plus spouses) got together at Cinetopia for the Tim Burton film, Dark Shadow... if you love Tim Burton, you'll love this movie, and of course Johnny Depp is in it, so that alone is worth checking it out! A few days later, we all gathered once again at Blitz... just couldn't get enough celebrating that week! Rumor has it that Castor's significant other, Nikki, made him a Carmel apple cheesecake. Funny, but we haven't seen any evidence of it!
With spring comes special 'dos for Prom, graduation and summer weddings and Ritual can definitely help you out with these! We are booking through the summer right now, so give us a call to find a spot for yourself. All of us at Ritual have adjusted our work schedules to include our "play" schedules, so appointments are filling up fast!
Finally, this weekend is Memorial Day Weekend and this year it hold a special significance for me. You see, my grandfather, Ernest, was a decorated veteran of World War II, and he passed away this March. More like my father than my grandfather, Ernie was a grand example of hard work, loyalty to family and faith in God to all who knew him. He was nearly fatally injured when he served in the United States Army, and although he lived nearly 70 years with the results of his war injuries, he never complained. No matter where you stand politically, if you see a veteran or someone who currently serves in the military, go up to them and tell them thank you. The list of what they give up in their day to day lives and what they risk when they serve is long. A simple thank you is always appreciated. This year, it will mean more when I put up our flag, remembering my amazing grandfather. I am grateful he survived World War II and got to live a long life. Many that serve are not so lucky.
