It's Just Hair   - Thursday, August 16, 2012

Hair. It's what we do. We sleep, eat, drink hair. We find inspiration in colors, textures & shapes. We encourage our clients to use high quality products, come in for regular maintenance and consider changing it up once in a while (or every visit if they're up for it!). We can't get away from it. If you find us standing in line behind you at the grocery store, you can bet we're checking out your hair!

So, when we heard about our little friend Mykayla, we knew we had to get involved.

Mykayla is seven years old and on July 14th of this year she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Mykayla's mom made an appointment to get Mykayla's  head shaved because it had started to fall out, and that's when we hatched a plan...

Rather than schedule an appointment, why not have a party? A Head Shaving Party! We could have balloons and popcorn and sno-cones. It was a great idea, but we wanted to make it a little bit better. We didn't want Mykayla to be the first one to get her head shaved at Ritual the week of her party. We wanted her to be one of many to get her head shaved. So the fun began.

Over the course of two days we shaved many heads, all in support of Mykayla. Each person took a before picture holding a sign that said "This is for Mykayla!" and then they wrote their own message to Mykayla on a piece of paper for their after picture. By the time Mykayla and her family showed up, we had our clippers warmed up and ready for them. Two of our own staff even shaved it off for Mykayla, and we are very proud of them for taking the plunge! You can find a full album of this event and the days leading up to it on our Facebook Page.

We would like to thank Mykayla's family for allowing us the privilege of participating in Mykayla's big day. We are joining with them in coving Mykayla with positive energy and prayers of healing. Most of all, we'd like to thank Mykayla for reminding us that although hair is what we do, it is just hair.

You can learn more about Mykayla and follow her progress on a Facebook page her family has set up for her here.
