How Often Should I Get My Hair Cut?

This question gets asked in the salon on a daily basis, and the truth is, there are as many answers to this question as there are people in the salon.

Here are some guidelines to use to help you determine how often to cut your hair, keeping in mind that the average head of hair grows 1/2" each month:

Most of our male guests or our ladies with really short locks get their hair cut every 3-4 weeks. Staying on this schedule allows most of our guys to maintain a look that is professional without getting the, "Wow, you just got a haircut!" comments. Shaggy necklines and hair hanging over the ears are a clear indicator that you've gone too long.

If you have a haircut that is below your shoulders, you can likely stretch your visits for cuts out longer than most. A half an inch of growth is nothing if your hair is over a foot long, right? The most important thing with long hair is that you keep your ends from getting split and frazzled. 8-12 weeks would be the longest we'd recommend on going, and that is if you have healthy, strong hair. The second you see a split end, you should be making you way to the salon. That being said, if you have long hair that has layers or detailing around the face, the 8 week mark is more appropriate to keep you hair feeling like it has some shape.

Hair above your shoulders typically needs attention every 4-6 weeks. When you have a cute asymetrical bob, 6 weeks of growth (3/4") will likely make you want to pull your hair out!

If you are growing your hair out, stretch you appointments out an extra week, making sure to ask for less than the amount that your hair has grown to be cut off.

If you have chemical damage or have very fragile hair that can't stand up to much abuse, shorten your haircut visits by a week. It's very important to keep your strands in good condition, and just waiting that one extra week can be all it takes to let your split ends out of control!

It's often an over-used word that we throw around as easily as we walk past the pennies that we pass on the street. I love this song. I love those shoes. I love chocolate... okay, well maybe some loves go deep :)

One thing is certain, you can not truly love anyone or anything unless you truly love yourself. Taking the time to love YOU will make all of your relationships better. Remember hearing the addage: You can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself? Even the airlines know this. They encourage you to put on your oxygen mask first, before worrying about the masks of those around you.

This Valentine's Day, all of us at Ritual hope that you can spend a little time focusing on the things that you love about YOU!

Good Skin Starts With A Good Cleanser

If you have decided to start taking care of your skin, (and you should!) the first place to start is with a good cleanser. Here are some basic rules to follow when choosing a cleanser:

1. Don't be schizophrenic. Your skin regenerates itself on average, every three weeks, so when you start using a new skin-care product, you don't want to try something different every day. You won't have any idea what a new skin care product will do for you unless you stick with it for about a month. This gives your skin a chance to adjust to the cleanser and to turn over the skin cells that were exposed to the old cleanser. I know we all want miracles, but you have to wait a few weeks for them, okay?

2. In a world of free-range and organic frenzy, don't forget to treat your skin to products that are made with natural ingredients. Product lines that utilize natural ingredients are less likely to cause skin irritation or sensitivity.

3. Only use an "issue" specific cleanser, if you actually have the issues. I know it seems funny to think that someone might go looking for trouble where they didn't originally have any, but it happens all of the time. Your bottle of cleanser is empty, so you grab your teen age daughter's bottle, which just happens to be for acne prone skin. Chances are good that your skin is dramatically different from your daughters and your skin is going to protest at the anti-acne qualities in your daughter's cleanser.

4. Make it a habit. You brush your teeth twice a day (we hope!), and you should be washing your face twice a day. An easy way to make sure that this happens is to keep one bottle of cleanser near your bathroom sink, and another one in the shower. Keeping both locations stocked will ensure that your cleanser is ready when you are.

5. There is often the notion that soap is soap is soap, and it doesn't matter what you use, so long as you get your face clean. Never has that been more inacurate than on your face. Many bar soaps have a pH that is much higher than your skin's pH, so it is drying for your skin, which can lead to larger pores and skin that ages more quickly. Us a gentle cleanser that doesn't leave your skin with the squeeky clean feel and you'll be good to go.

At Ritual, we use and recommend Pharmagel's HydraCleanse. It smells great, is made of good, natural ingredients and leaves your skin feeling clean and soft.

Why The Heck Would I Want a Facial?

We know you have a big heart, but your skin is actually the largest organ of your body. If your body had a superhero, your skin would be it. It protects your body from all kinds of foreign invaders, and it can take a beating doing it!

Since your skin works overtime, protecting you, you should have it's back. Getting good sleep, eating nurishing foods, regular excersion- to the point of breaking a sweat, wearing sunscreen and drinking your H2O are all great things to do for your skin, but when was the last time you really spent some time focusing on your skin

Yes, facials are completely relaxing. It would be hard to understand the bliss that can be had when your facial tissues are massaged, unless you've experienced it. Yes, it feels delicious to lay in a darkened room for an hour or so while someone is pampering you. Those are great reasons to get any treatment, but facials actually do serve a purpose more important that that.

No one wants to look older. At least not anyone old enough to walk into a liquor store with REAL ID! Receiving facials regularly can slow down the clock on the wear and tear of your skin by increasing the circulation and stimulating cell turn-over. Wrinkles are cute on baby elephants, but most of us are not overly anxious to see them pop up around our eyes, mouth and forhead. The hydration that a facial provides, can slow those wrinkles from showing up on your face.

You've heard that a good sweat or a deep tissue massage can release toxins, right? Well a facial can do that too. Between the cleasing, exfoliation and hydration that a good facial will give you and the stimulating massage that comes with it, your poors will be clear and impurities that lie deep in your tissues will be released. Thanksgiving is known for a day of family, friends, football and food. If you are hosting, you will spend days cleaning and cooking, prepping so that everything is perfect when the doorbell rings. Multiple trips to the store, a couple of late nights or early mornings and a huge mess to clean up when all is said and done. Perhaps some turkey sandwiches or turkey soup and some Christmas shopping will be on the menu in the days that follow.

Do you have a special Thanksgiving tradition that your family does? Here are a couple of my favorite things to do to make the day more meaningful.

~Cook for those that are in need. Is there a person in your neighborhood who will be alone on Thanksgiving? Do you know any college students that can't make it back home? Does your local soup kitchen need help providing a meal for the needy? How about bringing some food to the Ronald McDonald House where families of seriously ill children stay. Spending time helping other people will make you thankful for your own bounty more than anything else ever could. There are opportunities everywhere. Think of the elderly living in retirement homes or assisted living. Many of them would love to have a family to spend the holiday with!

~Make a Thankful Tree, like the one we have at the salon. Punch leaves out of fall colored paper, let everyone write down what they are thankful for on the leaves and using miniature clothes pins, found at the craft store, attach the leaves to the tree. Encourage everyone to write down something each time they pass the tree. At the end of the day, put all of the leaves into a hat and draw one out. The person who wrote on that leaf can win a small prize (or they get to do the dishes!). Or read all of the leaves outloud while you are enjoying the pumpkin pie.

~This is my new favorite thing to do... Write Thankful Letters. Have each guest think of one person for whom they are especially thankful for this year. Hand out pens and paper and encourage your guests to write the person a letter telling them why they are special.
You can include preschoolers in this activity by having them dictate the letter to an adult or an older child. When everyone is done, give them an envelope and stamp for their letter and drop the letter into the mailbox. Even if you don't do this as a group, try it yourself. Imagine your joy that receiving a letter from someone you love would bring. It would be a treasure for sure!

What's Up for Fashion Week?

Fashion week is a time to gather inspiration for your next haircut or an updated warerobe. While you likely won't be strutting around the Northwest in most of what appears on the runways, you will likely be shopping soon, for fashions that have been inspired by the styles and colors of what will be seen this week.

Now is a great time to reevaluate your fashion sense and decide if it might not be time to make a change. Being creative with your hair and your clothes is can give you a fresh new look that gets heads turning. If you need help, here is a great book that can help point you in the right direction.

In the salon, think about adding some serious shine with a translucent tint to it with our glossing treatment. High shine, a subtle color shift and short-term committment make this a low-risk but high-impact change. If you want something more permanent, ask for us to strategically place a few foils of a contrasting color into your hair. It can spice you up with out having to sit through a whole head of foils. Ombre' or Baliage are also fun color options and with a color wheel full of choices, the sky is the limit!

What's New for Fall?

Well, the kids are back in school, which means that our warm weather (which just arrived!) isn't going to stick around for long. Fall brings new schedules and routines to many households, sometimes these are hugely anticipated and sometimes we'd rather have another few weeks of summer.

Either way, fall is a great time to turn to your favorite reality show, entertainment news show or celebrity gossip magazine to find out what the new trends of the new season are.

It's also a great time to go through your closets and get rid of all of those Guess jeans lurking in the dark recesses (yes, I DID see someone wearing some the other day- Guess jean shorts- to the knee- remember those?), the clothes that are missing buttons that you were going to replace and the old, broken, or tarnished jewelry taking up the real estate of your jewelry box.

If you haven't done so already, splurge on some matching hangers, (maybe wooden?) and then organize your closet. Be tough on yourself and purge all of the stuff you've been hanging on to "just in case". Opening your closet should be a treat when you're done, plus, you'll have room for fall's new items. Check out this website for a list of must-haves and must-not-have-any-longers, and once you've got that closet of yours whipped into shape, go get yourself a little something as a reward!

It's a law of nature. We always want what we don't have. If you're blonde, you want to be brunette. Brown eyed people wish they'd gotten blue peepers. Tall people want to be shorter and short people want to be taller. Well, now, if you are one of those people that have longed for silky straight hair instead of an untameable mane, you are in luck.

Ritual stylists can make that curly mop silky straight and smooth. Check out these amazing before and after pictures of our friend, Denise. When Denise came in, she had spent lots of time at home trying to make her hair smooth so that our job would be easier. You can see the results of her efforts in the fuzzy and full hair she brought us.

After we straightened her hair chemically, but before we neutralized it, you can see how improved it looks. This was just blown out with a dryer- no flat iron.

The final picture shows her hair completed. Again, there was no flat iron needed to accomplish this look, just a dryer and a brush. Needless to say, she was thrilled!

Thermal hair straightening starts at $200 and can take up to 4 hours for your first treatment. Most clients get a retouch 2-3 times a year, depending upon their hair.

It's Less About Learning Something New

I remember when I was new to the salon industry, when a hair show was in the neighborhood, or in a neighboring state, it was so exciting to go and see what I could learn (because there was PLENTY to learn!). I'd be excited for weeks in advance and would plan to be at the show every second it was open. I'd sit in on as many classes or sessions that I possibly could, load my suitcase up with the newest products and tools and head home with my head spinning.

Twenty years later, hair shows have become a different thing. I still go looking to learn something new, but now I have to look a bit harder for it. I am choosier about the classes that I sit in on because I can spot a "filler" class a mile away. I don't enjoy sitting in on classes where the platform artist makes snide comments about salon work or clients. After all, that is my bread and butter, and likely, it is where they go back to when the stage is packed up and the lights are put away. I can spot a "green" artist in the quiver of the voice or the shaking of their hands...

Now days, a hair show is less about what I can learn, but about finding new inspiration and getting rejuvinated in an ever-changing and creative industry. No, the wild looks on the stage are not going to translate to the suburban streets, but seeing beautiful, colorful and, yes, even crazy hair, makeup and wardrobe, get your mind thinking in a different way. It reminds me of why this is the industry that captured my heart.

It's All In A Day's Work

One of the best things about working in this industry is the diversity of our days. Yes, we all have our favorite things to do in the salon, but even our favorites would get dull if we did them day after day, hour after hour. Our appointments each day are as varied as our guests. Long or short, curly or straight, conservative or edgy. We do it all, and we LOVE it!
Saturday was a perfect example of how a day at Ritual can go from one extreme to the next. This example is from elegant to sassy, however, oddly enough, they both chose purple as their inspiration!
You may recognize Skyler as the young lady who runs the front desk in the afternoons and on Saturdays. She was also in a purple mood when planning for West Albany's prom. She was hoping for a glammed up look and we think she got it! Shawn created Skyler's hair, inspired from some photos Skyler brought in from the internet & Skyler happily reported that it stayed perfectly all night~

Kirsten created Skyler's look for her make-up application. She chose silvers and soft purples to compliment Skyler's beautiful dress. She added some glamorous lashes to complete Skyler's look. Again, even with all of the dancing, Skyler's make-up was perfectly intact at the end of the night.

Morgan came in with beachy, bleach blonde hair with some roots. She had decided that she wanted to be an electric purple. Well, electric purple it is! The line of color that we use (Joico) has a line called Color Intensity which is loaded with fun, semi-permanent colors such as the purple one that Castor used on Morgan. It is also available in teal, green, hot pink, red, orange and yellow. Depending upon the hair's porosity and condition, Color Intensity can last up to 8 shampoos, leaving your hair a blank palette again for the next fun color choice, and like all Joico Vero KPak color, it reconstructs as it colors so hair emerges shiny, healthy and manageable!

Recently, we had to terminate two of our employees for misuse of confidential client information and for divulging confidential business information to another salon. In addition, another employee left on her own accord after a warning was issued to her for breaching her confidentiality agreement. National Sandwich Day!

Nov. 3 is the anniversary of John Montagu's birthday. It's believed that this 18th-century English noble, better known as the fourth Earl of Sandwich, wanted to eat with one hand during a 24-hour gambling bender. So, it's November. What a blustery day it is too!

Each November, with your generous help, we collect donations to sponsor Christmas stockings and board games for abused children in foster care. This year, we are sponsoring 33 great kids. Many of these kids would not receive anything for Christmas if it weren't for these stockings & games.

It's the Memorial Day weekend, and although the weather is looking less than fabulous, we hope that you get to spend the weekend doing exactly what you want! Here's the run-down on our plans:

Javaise is going to go camping with her boyfriend and his daughter. They'll be tenting it at Bar View Jetty in Tillamook. We'll cross our fingers for her that it won't be too rainy!

Renee is going to hike the Pittock Mansion trail with her boyfriend. She loves that trail because it's an easy jaunt, although designated a moderate hike. Again, crossing our fingers that it is at least dry!

Whitney is going to a BBQ and then she will be learning the fine art of brewing beer from her boyfriend. A summer ale is in the works and I can't wait to taste it (hint!).

Lisa is going to have a girl's night Happy Hour & Sex in the City night with some friends and then hitting up Farmer's Market Sunday for some fresh food...

Shawn is going to Cirque De Soleil at the Keller with her family and then either hanging at the pool (weather permitting) or heading to Out of This World Pizza with her whole herd of kiddos.

Attending the Seattle hair show
I began my day with a makeup artistry class that went over product by Sorme Cosmetics but it wasn't just a traditional class just about product, but a class about application and technique depending on a client's face shape and desire makeup look. This will blend very nicely with the education and knowledge that I have received as a TIGI makeup artist.

I attended the Paul Mitchell class which I was super excited about because I had seen the guest artist (Ira Sage) about 6 years ago ad he was a great teacher full of awesome techniques. He also busted out a dance from Janet Jackson "Control" that I LOVED!

I got to peek in on Aquage's updo classes that were on stage. the artistry involved with their collections have always been amazing. The instructor, Chris, is actually from Portland. He's great and I attended a class from him last summer.

Normally at hair shows, you walk around and check out each manufacturer's new products and watch hair demos on stage. This year, I got to be a client with Creative Nail Design and their fabulous new product called Shellac. I got a full manicure followed up with a Shellac get nal polish that makes your manicure last for 14 days. It's a new technology that combines the color of polish with he adhesion of gel to give a long lasting manicure without the damage of filing on the nails like traditional gels or acrylic. It's also a product that can be used on nurses and doctors because it is not an enhancement, but a manicure.

To finish off my day, I attended a Joico Le Graphique Color and Cut collection that was hosted by Sue Pemberton. She is an outstanding artist and visionary for color. Sue Pemberton just got nominated for another NAHA award for Best Colorist of the Year. I got to see new spring/summer cuts that feature fun colors like teal, magenta and coppers to name a few. They were all made to be avant garde or natural enough that just a hint of color underneath could peek through.

Next, I attended a TIGI Rock-a-holic Cutting Class by Mitchel Wilson...

I got to rock out on a tour bus that has been used by many famous musicians in the past and now TIGI has transformed this tour bus into a salon that is traveling around the country teaching new fun hair cutting techniques. Mitchel was an AWESOME teacher that went over two great haircuts and new techniques that I have never seen before. I also learned a lot about TIGI's new Rockaholic line of hair products. I got m picture taken in front of the tour bus holding the same guitar that Joan Jett uses and soon I will have my picture featured on the cover of "SPIN" magazine. Ok, so it's a fake magazine cover that makes me look like a rock star. I also got to hear about Mitchel living and teaching for TIGI Australia for the last four years.

What's Up With Your Favorite Ritual Girls...?

Well, you can tell by the blowing wind and the sideways rain that it is spring in Oregon. We're looking forward to some warm weather, and more importantly, the sunshine!

What's been happening at Ritual? Well, let's see, Javaise celebrated her birthday with a trip to Hawaii. She did some para sailing and a ton of site seeing, and she visited with her boyfriend's family. It was a great trip and she can't wait to go back... When Javaise returned from Hawaii, we all got together for a little Red Robin birthday celebration, because where else can you go where you get to hold up a spoon while wearing a coffee filter on your head as a bunch of people sing out-of-tune birthday songs to you?

Whitney also spent some time at the beach, but the Oregon beach. She was in her hometown of Newport for a week catching up with family. She's back now, and looking forward to attending a superheroes birthday party... not for a little kid, but for a friend who is nearly 30! All guests must dress like a superhero... I vote for Wonder Woman, but that's just me :)

Renee' has recently purchased an RV with her boyfriend and they've been fixing it up. We can't wait to hear fun stories of their camping escapades. Visions of the Griswold's family vacations or scenes from the movie RV keep coming to mind. Purhaps a Ritual camping trip is in order... if we can just find a driver! Renee' also continues on in her studies at PCC.

Lisa spent a long weekend in Rockaway with a few friends. Campfires, games and even high tea were all enjoyed. She is still taking dance classes at New Vision, and continues to try new classes as she has time. She was really lucky and scored some Muse tickets, which she will be going to tomorrow night... watch out! She truly is a fan!

As for me? Well, life is extra crazy right now as my family is wrapping up a six month stint of fostering three young children. We've regressed to sippy cups and car seats, but are so glad to be able to help these kids wait for a permanent family. Once they are placed, we'll be sighing a big sigh, putting our house back together and planning a vacation!

In preparation for our annual pumpkin carving contest, we headed out to the "Funkin" Patch. For those of you who are not up to date on the latest in pumpkin carving, Funkins are fake pumkins that you can carve... they don't rot AND you don't have to scoop the guts out! Faster, easier and much cleaner!

Whitney and Renee' had a "Funkins Gone Wild" moment, Shawn hid amongst the scarecrows and everyone tried on cute animal faces. You know, pretty much the usual pumpkin patch activities, minus the corn maze and facepainting~

Once our adventures at the Funkin Patch were
completed, we headed back to Ritual where we
got down to business. Everyone had their own
unique take on the perfect Funkin, using different methods to create perfection.

Refreshments of kettlecorn and mimosas were on hand to make things festive. A strange combination, maybe for some, but it worked for us!

One Fish, Two Fish...

Meet our new fish! Lisa was so broken hearted when Valentino passed away, that she ran right out and got these two little guys. Their names have been the topic of great discussion... Starsky and Hutch, Matt and Johnny, Dolce and Gabana... and after yesterday, Marchello and Lucky. Don't tell PETA, but yesterday, Lisa scooped the little guys out of their bowl so she could give their house a good cleaning and while she was out of the room, one of them ("Lucky", on the left) jumped out of the cup he was in and lay stranded on the counter top. We're not sure how long he was there, but when he was found, he was no longer gasping for water. He got scooped up and tossed back into his home where things looked bleak for a bit... he was floating upside down for awhile! But, Lucky him, he managed to survive the day and today, he was looking great! Here's to hoping that all fish stay in their bowls!

We've Had A Loss At Ritual

We knew this day was coming, but it doesn't stop us from being sad! Our beloved Valentino has finally gone to that great big ocean in the sky... We'll be wearing black for our week of mourning, wait, we always wear black... well, anyway, we'll miss him, although we won't miss cleaning his bowl~ Please take a moment to read Valentino's obituary.

Valentino Javier Ritual was born January 26th, 2006 in Scappoose, Oregon. He spent his childhood in the tanks of the Tanasbourne Petco and found his way to Ritual via a hopeful young man delivering a belated Valentine. The romance didn't stick, but Valentino stuck around none-the-less. He spent his long 30 month life swimming in circles and having people affectionately ask "is he dead?" Valentino passed away on the evening Tuesday, September 22nd after fighting valiantly to stay upright. A bowl side service was held on Wednesday, September 23rd, and was attended by many who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that rememberances be made to 104.1AM The Fish. Song requests are appreciated during our time of grieving.

If you haven't been in to Ritual in a little while, you should know that we're in the middle of a little project.

We are turning some little-used space into a private room which we are planning on using to provide custom facials as well as waxing services that you wouldn't want to receive in public, (legs, armpits, bikinis and the like). The walls are up and waiting to be painted, and soon we'll be furnished and ready for appointments! Yea! We will be using and recommending Dermalogica facial products which we love. If you have any questions about their products, ask away. They have an acne line that is a miracle worker and their anti-age line is amazing too... just look at us, we're in our 70's, don't we look great?! :)

Also, while we're here chatting, we wanted to update you on our H1N1 precautions... we work in very close contact with clients on a daily basis. Our clients have jobs and families and those jobs and families mean contact with other people and children etc. and so we are at high risk of receiving the gift of the flu virus. We've all upped our dosage of vitamins (especially Vitamin D as per Dr. Oz!) and are washing and sanitizing our hands between each client. We encourage you to up your hand sanitizing and treat everyone as if they have germs!

Please call to reschedule your appointment if you feel you are coming down with the flu and we'll do the same.

Together, we can survive the Swine Flu... we'll get our 15 minutes of fame elsewhere, thank you very much!

Art, Wine and Body Fat...?

So, we had a blast at our open house... if you missed it, we missed you!

Todd had some great art on display and hung more for us to enjoy. There was food and drink, plenty, in fact! There were great giveaways, including blowdryers, flat irons, personal training sessions, and more! And then there was Chuck. Chuck from Pacific Personal Training was on hand to tell us just how fat we all were. Good thing we had wine in hand and that we were in a good mood! We also were informed on what NOT to eat if you have an important event in 4 weeks and you need to look hot(ter). Fun for all!

Big Changes!

We hear it all of the time... "just a trim". Keeping our clients' cuts shaped up is something that we do on a daily basis. Every once in a while though, we get the client who says, "cut it off!" and we all snap to attention.

Recently, our clients Greg and Diana Gates sent their daughter Larissa in. She was turning 21 and ready for a "grown up" look. Wow! What a transformation! A shorter, sassier cut and a deeper color gave her a more mature look. Maybe more mature than mom and dad were ready for! Happy 21st Birthday Larissa!

We celebrated Shawn's birthday with an amazing dinner made especially for all of us by Lisa's fabulous husband. Not only was the meal tasty, it looked like a work of art! Following dinner, we had some fun playing Dance Dance Revolution and Rock Band... Yes, we pretty much rocked! Shawn especially enjoyed singing... if you know anything about Shawn, you'll know she's not shy about that! Most amazing of all was the fact that we could all keep our plans a secret from Shawn, even up to the last minute~ Happy Birthday Shawn!

Holiday Festivities

The Ritual bunch got together and celebrated Christmas early. Thanks to The Marina Fish House, we all got to enjoy a great dinner and no one had to cook or clean. The Christmas ships were out in full decorations which added to the festivities. After our great dinner we got the wonderful gift of a parking ticket since we overstayed our welcome(we didn't pay the meter enough). We wish you all a happy holiday season and a great new year.

So, there's snow... I've enjoyed the chance to relax and do a bit of nothing... I'm almost bored now, though!
For those of you checking to see if we'll be open tomorrow, I'm not sure yet.
I'll be driving (or sliding) into work in the morning to see how the roads, and the parking lot are and I'll post another blog. Although we can't stand split ends or roots any more than you, it's not worth risking your neck, or ours, so we'll be playing it safe.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and it is time for our fourth annual Creating Confidence beauty supplies and beauty tools drive. All donated items will be distributed to women and children that have left all of their personal belongings behind as they have fled domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Resource Center and Monika's House helps hundreds of women each year, get back on their feet in a new, safe environment. Monika's House continues to be the only women's shelter in Washington County.
So... open up those bathroom cabinets people, and sort through your goods. We'll accept any items that are new or very gently used. Please make sure that heat tools such as dryers and irons are in good working order.
